Urban Art Project

At the moment the Yarra Ranges Shire is in the final stages of installing a new range of custom designed tourist signage made by none other than us, Lump. I had a chat to Chris Herman and this is what he had to say about the project.

Through Lumpian Dale Mckeon’s enthusiastic referral, we were approached by Kylie Angove from Yarra Ranges Council to collaborate with her on re-inventing the Shire tourist signage. Kylie had some strong forms and resolved ideas about what the outcome of these signs should look like in order to reflect elements of the hillside communities. The brief included detailing and fabrication of a signage series used by the shire and its local businesses to map and share community facilities, businesses and the like.

We here at Lump sculpture have very, much enjoyed the collaboration with Yarra Ranges Council on these beautiful Shire signs. There were many iterations and revisions of the design to ensure the form was purely site specific to the Yarra Ranges region and this obviously influenced materiality of the structures also. Corten steel plate with a natural rusted finish was used for the large upright beam to complement the soft green tones of surrounding environs. The sheer size and weight of the structures proved an adventurous challenge during construction and assembly, we hope that the versatility of these front panels will enable the signage to evolve and grow as the community changes over the many years to come. With one of our prized lump team members being a long standing resident of the Yarra Ranges Shire, we all can now feel that we have shared a bit of the community by participating in this project and forming lovely working relationships with the Yarra Ranges Council as well as the incredibly meticulous and skilled Esjay landscapes crew and equally brilliant lads from Form-a-sign.
