Melbourne Indesign the event

Last weekend Lump Sculpture Studio banded together as one of the few groups of sculptors to showcase three new stunning designs as part of the recent Melbourne Indesign event.

Exhibiting as specialists in metal work, Lump partnered on the day with Temperature Design to transform Collingwood’s Byron Lane while celebrating the release of Lump’s new Shard outdoor planters, Missing Link sculpture and Tricycle Sculptures.Vassallo said the team was rapt to be part of Melbourne Indesign for the first time this year because it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Lump studio’s strong and varied capabilities.

“In keeping with Melbourne Indesign’s theme of ‘Inception’, we hoped our installation would spark ideas and inspire others – to literally encourage the inception of new ideas,” Vassallo said.

“Lump caters for smaller private works, commission pieces for architectural and landscape environments, and design and manufacture for projects ranging from public art sculptures to decorative screens, playscapes and skyscrapers.”

The Lump installation, led by Lump industrial designer Chris Herman, featured an Ephemeral Canopy laser-cut using Corten steel, to compliment the precinct’s Walk the Wood theme and provide a gorgeous place for visitors to sit and enjoy a coffee. Visitors to Lump’s Melbourne Indesign installation were invited to meander through a miniature wood of native trees from Fleming’s Nurseries, while pondering over some of Lump’s favourite pieces, including Jewell’s award-winning work The Clasp, which took out the Toorak Village Sculpture Prize last year, as well as several new screens. The highlight of the display was the unveiling of the three new sculptural pieces, which will become a permanent part of the Lump family. These include:

– Missing Link sculpture

Designed and hand-crafted by Lump Sculpture Studio founder Chris Vassallo, the Missing Link sculpture provided a stunning entrance piece to greet visitors to the installation. The beautiful hand-crafted work, measuring 1500 x 1550 x 450mm and made from aluminium with a powder coated varied bronze finish, was developed purely as a result of aesthetics while working with adjoining shapes to construct the positive form.

It bares a strong resemblance to the Fire Ring in that the structure is made from many smaller individual segments and the overall positive form creates a viewing porthole.

– Shard outdoor planters

The Shard outdoor planters, made from corten steel with a natural rusted finish, are reminiscent of volcanic shards or semi precious gems rising from the depths of the earth. As part of the Melbourne Indesign display the Shard planters featured architectural-style foliage by Lisa Ellis from Warner’s Nurseries’ range. Available in three sizes, the versatile planters can stand tall or be mounted on the side and are available in Corten steel, powder coated aluminium or any of Lump’s Faux Finishes.

“The Shard planters are like a work of art – they can stand alone as a focal point in the garden or be used as planters for cascading plants or shrubs, with the larger Shard designs able to provide a beautiful frame for trees,” Herman said.

– Tricycle Sculptures

A trio of Tricycle Sculptures completed the trifecta of new Lump pieces on show at Melbourne Indesign.Designed by Chris Vassallo and inspired by the exploration of minimalist sculpture trends in the 1960’s, the Tricycle Sculptures are made from Corten steel, stainless steel and aluminium. All Lump designs are created in-house from hand-drawn original designs and manufactured on site.
