APEC Haus Lakatoi Sculpture

A collaboration with Jim Fitzpatrick Architects and the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery

The Lakatoi Sculpture was developed in close collaboration with Jim Fitzpatrick Architects and the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery (NMAG) referencing the sails of the ‘lakatoi’ sailing craft from annual explorer trading expeditions to the Papuan Gulf.

The sails of the sculpture are positioned as if at full sail symbolising not only the vigorous trade and explorer expeditions of the past but also celebrating the iconic traditions and the modern trade that continue today.

The sculpture stands 12 meters tall and is supported by a central column.  The outer frame of each sail is constructed from marine grade stainless steel and each is filled with hand woven copper strips representing the fabric of the sail. Standing at 12 meters tall the sails are embraced by the curved roof line of APEC Haus also definitively designed with inspiration from the lakatoi sailing craft.  Read more about the project here. www.jfarchitects.com.au
