Artist – Mandy Nicholson

Manna gum leaves, symbols of welcome, are filled with imagery emblematic of the seven seasons of the Central/Eastern Gulinj (Kulin) Nation. These are juxtaposed against wave forms representing the six layers of Country. Undulating parallel lines evoke our shared journey through time. The title ‘Murrenda’ honours how everything relies on each other for survival.

Mandy Nicholson is Wurundjeri, Dja Dja wurrung and Ngurai illum wurrung woman based in Narrm, Melbourne. Her paintings, murals and public art installations honour Country family and spirituality. As well as an artist, Nicholson is an archaeologist, Woiwurrung language specialist, educator, PhD recipient and community leader.

The artwork was created with the consent of the Traditional Custodians of this land, the Bunurong people.

Commissioned by the Level Crossing Removal Project with ADA Consulting for Berwick Station, is a celebration of First Nation perspectives of time, rooted in the observation of natural cycles and patterns.
