About Lump

Lump has quietly established itself as one of Australia’s premier designers and creators of contemporary art and outdoor sculptures, committed to producing original designs and high quality art pieces in their Melbourne studio. Originally founded by Chris Vassallo and later joined by Timothea Jewell, Lump Sculpture Studio at its essence, is a place where art is essential to the lives of the people who work there, a place where art provides a living, a sense of purpose and an opportunity to keep discovering.

Evolve. Design. Create.

Inside Lump Studio

Lump Studio is a large and well-equipped design and art fabrication space where we design and make decorative screens, light features and sculptures. We specialise in creating original contemporary pieces for both large and small, private and public art projects. And we collaborate with artists, designers and architects to realise and construct their visions. Make an appointment to visit or learn more about the studio, we are looking forward to making something new with you.

Visits to the studio are strictly by appointment only.

Trailfinders Australian Garden Presented By Fleming’s

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013  |  BEST IN SHOW

2013 celebrates the centenary of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the celebrating starts with a focus on sustainability. And sustainability is the perfect focus for this year’s designer Phillip Johnson. This year’s team showcase a recreation of a naturally occurring Australian eco-system. A design envy approach to water management and a healthy, natural, sustainable environment.

At Lump this is our fourth Chelsea experience and we are very excited that our brand new Wood stack screen is part of the centenary show. The Wood stack screen is incorporated into the garden as a series of four original screens and six custom designed pieces.

The tree ring design used to create the overall Wood stack design is also carried through into a sculptural staircase. This staircase leads up to a studio perched high in the garden and has been meticulously designed and manufactured at Lump in conjunction with Atkinson and Pontifex.

Trailfinders Australian Garden Presented By Fleming’s

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012  |  SILVER GILT

Jason Hodges from Greenart Gardens designed a spacious and functional garden specifically designed for living and entertaining outdoors. There is a grand illusion of space created by the large sections of lawn in this design, which until recently have been a thing of the past.

The design also includes sandstone that is constructed into walls reminiscent of the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a lounge area that includes a 4m long
dining table, a wood fire pizza oven AND a bbq.

To the left of the garden there is a spa adjoining a large pavilion, here on the sandstone wall you can see our Lump Kangaroo Paw Light Feature Panel in a very stylish offset position.

In the front garden nestled amongst a typically warm, tropical plant palette sits a family of delicate Lump Leaf Skeleton Sculptures.

Fleming’s and Trailfinders Australian Garden

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2008  |  GOLD

Designed by Jamie Durie and constructed by Ian Barker and Associates the 2008 garden reflects on the natural colours, textures and materials of Australia.

This year’s design is intended to give visitors a brief glimpse of indigenous Australian Culture and the laid back Australian lifestyle.

Lump created 4 Gabion baskets for the design made from steel with a faux copper and green patina finish as well as contributing to structural elements of the pond.

Trailfiders Australian Garden Presented By Fleming’s

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2007  |  Silver Gilt

Mark Browning invited Lump to be part of the team that Fleming’s took to Chelsea for the 2007 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Mark incorporated into his medal winning design 6 custom sized Light Feature Panels made for Corten steel with a Kangaroo grass image designed by Mark himself. And a custom designed table, pendant light and a Lump Sphere Sculpture finished with the Polished Concrete Effect.

The main garden area features a raised platform of Victorian bluestone with built in seating and a table, creating an open secluded space, which is surrounded by water. A large fish tank embedded in a feature wall promotes tranquility and movement.

A spectacular steel triangular pergola ties all the elements together, and creates curved shadows on the fractured granite pavers.
